Trevor Wintersgill

“Never think you know it all. There are amazingly talented people in this industry and you learn every day if you are open to it.”

What do you do and what led you to this career?

I am the Director, North America Retail Brand at the Jordan Brand (Nike Inc.). I am Responsible for defining and developing the retail brand strategy across North America on a long term, annual and seasonal basis — with the ultimate goal of creating EPIC consumer experiences at retail across distribution channels.

My career started 23 years ago at small street fashion store (Ath-Leisure – Part of JD sports) in my hometown of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Working my way from the stockroom to the sales floor to eventually running the store. I then moved around the UK for JD Sports in various roles from Store Management, shop fit teams & area Visual and Operations roles. I then moved to Nuremberg, Germany in 2006 to work for adidas where I held many roles within Retail / Visual Merchandising / new store designs, My last role being the Global Senior Director for Global Visual Merchandising.

My family and I then relocated to Portland, Oregon in August 2017 where I started my role at the Jordan Brand.

Fun fact: I never thought I would work in retail so long. My passion has always been coaching soccer!

What are the names and ages of your kids?

I have a 15-year-old girl named Sophie, a four-year-old girl named Olivia Kitty, and one more baby on the way — due January 2019.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a father?

Watching their little personalities develop and the funny things kids say. Seeing how excited they get at birthdays, celebrations, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc. They just live for those special moments and remind us parents of what it was like to be a child.

And what is the most challenging?

Simply having two girls — need I say more? Really though, seeing them sad and trying to pick them up is the most challenging.

What has been your greatest career achievement thus far?

I have had many, from small store openings to flagship door openings across major cities throughout the world, as well as seeing people from my teams grow and go on to bigger and better opportunities. The biggest of all was getting offered my current role here at the Jordan Brand (Nike inc.) — It’s like a dream job for me to be able to work for such a coveted brand that is really defining not just the sports industry, but also the fashion industry at the same time. Getting to work on and open the first true Jordan Flagship door in Downtown LA within my first year at the brand has also been very special.

What is your best advice for someone new to your industry?

Never think you know it all. There are amazingly talented people in this industry and you learn every day if you are open to it.

What is your best advice for a new dad?

Stay calm and support your partner 100% of the time.

What is your current favorite activity with your kids?

With having two different ages, these vary a little, but I am lucky enough that both kids love books, so taking them to Downtown Portland and Powells book store has become a great activity to do.

Lyrics to live by:

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
Now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever
